Quito as one of the `911 UNESCO Heritage Sites´

The World Heritage List includes 911 properties from all over the world,that are considered part of the cultural and natural heritage by the `World Heritage Committee´.This organization is in charge of determining what places have an important universal value. This list includes 704 cultural places, 180 natural places and 27 mixed properties; in about 151 cities around the world. In our country places like the city of Quito, the Galápagos Islands, Sangay National Park and the Historic Center of Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca; are established in this very important list.

Quito as part of this list now is consider, in an international context, as a place to be protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. This in theory will help to raise awareness among the citizens and local or international governments for heritage preservation. Also a financial assistance and expert advice from the `World Heritage Committee´ is expected to support activities for the preservation of the city.
